permanent magnetism

Have you ever considered the way magnets work? The childhood fridge magnet game may have been one of the first-time experiences of physics, but did you know why magnets repel or attract? That is referred to as rare earth permanent magnets. A very fascinating subject which gives us an idea regarding the behavior of magnets and their utility in our daily lives.

This leads to permanent magnetism, where specific materials — like iron and nickel — can generate a field without any external energy. They don’t require any assistance from batteries or electricity. It is this magnetic field that causes magnets to be either attracted to, or repel from each other. Think about two magnets trying to stick together — if their poles are facing the right way, they will pull in toward each other. If they’re pointing in the wrong direction, they will repel each other. All of this is thanks to the magic of permanent magnetism!

The science behind permanent magnetic fields

The science of magnets is related to really small particles called electrons. Electrons are however extremely small — so tiny that they cannot be seen by our naked eyes — but play a very important role. Electrons circulate around the nucleus of an atom, like planets in a miniature solar system. Electrons possess a certain intrinsic property known as spin. This is the spin which generates a weak magnetic field around each electron.

In certain materials — like iron, nickel and cobalt — clumps of electrons can line up and spin in unison. This makes them generate a much, more potent magnetic field. This unique behavior of the electrons is known as ferromagnetism. This property makes these materials ideal for creating permanent magnets that we use in our daily lives.
