They rotate around the atoms that make up the material. When many of these electrons spin in the same direction, they produce a magnetic force. This is the force that makes the magnets work! It can attract or repel people and objects. That is why magnets are really cool and fun to play with!
The 3 main types of magnets: permanent, temporary, and electromagnet. A permanent magnet is always a magnet, and thus they always have their magnetic strength. Next are soft magnets, or temporary magnets. These include materials, such as some kinds of steel, that can become magnets when they are in the presence of a permanent magnet. This means that when they are near a strong magnet, they can collect other things. And finally, there are electromagnets. These are particularly notable as they are created when an electric current runs through a wire. Electromagnets can be switched on and off, making them extremely handy when used in other machines, including motors and generators!
There are many fascinating applications of magnets! One key area is medicine. They take pictures of our insides with magnets so they can look at our bodies and see what is going on. They do this using a special machine — an MRI. It uses magnets to capture detailed images of our organs and tissues. Magnets, too, play a key role in computers and other electronics. They are used for storage, similar to how you store your favorite games and pictures. Our devices would not function as well without magnets! And even some toys, like magnetic building blocks, use its ability to stick together and let us build fun structures!
Exciting Fact: Did you know that magnets can accelerate trains? Did you know there’s a train in Japan that floats on magnets and goes really fast, to the point it’s cruising like a plane! This is known as a maglev train, and it travels along its track without touching American railcars. And magnets help some roller coasters go faster and have more loops to ride! And there’s been smart use of magnets by scientists to clean oil spills at sea. They assist in keeping the environment safe and getting oil out of the water by using magnet. Isn’t that amazing?
